Reaching Black Saints --and-- George Q. Cannon and the Apostates (WMV)
1) "Reaching Black Saints" by Marvin Perkins MJM Entertainment Group recording artist, Marvin Perkins, tackles the difficult issues faced by black members or investigators when they hear of early LDS attitudes towards blacks and the pre-1978 denial of the priesthood. MarvinÆs presentation pulls no punches as he examines seemingly racist statements made by early LDS leaders. He shows, however, that such statements are not only indicative of the context and times when the statements were made, but also that modern scriptures do not reflect the racist attitudes so prevalent among virtually all Americans in the nineteenth century. Perkins argues that while Latter-day Saints were gaining understanding line upon line, the Word of God already gave instruction for the equality of the Children of God—something that would be recognized as the Church matured. 2) "George Q. Cannon and the Apostates" by Davis Bitton Retired University of Utah historian, Dr. Davis Bitton, recounts the fascinating details of nineteenth-century Apostle George Q. CannonÆs dealings with LDS apostates. Those interested in early LDS approaches to apologetics and nineteenth-century critics will find this presentation stimulating. iscounts).
