Mormon Battalion: Its History and Achievements

Brigham H. Roberts, Salt Lake City, Utah: The Deseret News Press, 1919. Reprint by Archive Publishers, Grantsville, Utah, 2003, 5.25x8" softbound, 105 pages.

This history is not as personal as Daniel Tyler's "Concise History of the Mormon Battalion" but is full of excellent historical material looking at the 'big picture' of the march. With the historical perspective of time, B. H. Roberts reviews the following chapter headings: March Compared with other Marches; The Call of the Battalion; Advantages and Disadvantages; March from Ft. Leavenworth; March from Santa Fe to Gila; March from Colorado to Pacific; The Battalion in California; Battalion Record in California; and The Battalion in Perspective.

Few authors are as widely respected and collected in the LDS Church as Elder B. H. Roberts. The once semi-literate miner and blacksmith determined at the age of eighteen to return to school enter the field of teaching. Called as a general authority at the age of thirty-one, Elder B. H. Roberts spent a lifetime compiling and writing the history of the Latter-day Saints. Having acted as editor of both the Millennial Star and the Salt Lake Herald, he is probably best known today for his editing of the six-volume History of the Church and authoring an additional six-volumes containing the Comprehensive History of the Church.
