Following Christ: The Parable of the Divers and More Good News
Stephen E. Robinson, Salt Lake City, Utah: Deseret Book, 2004, 4.25x7" softbound, 159 pages.
Note:This book is the same size as those in the Missionary Reference Library. The groundbreaking book Believing Christ by Stephen Robinson has become a standard in understanding what it means to have faith in Jesus Christ and to be justified by faith in Him through the gospel covenant. Now, in Following Christ: The Parable of the Divers and More Good News, Brother Robinson explains what happens after we have entered the gospel covenant. He writes, "Where Believing Christ dealt with entering the covenant, this book will focus on staying in the covenant. If being truly converted is to accept Christ as Lord and to make Him the Lord of our lives, then this must somehow be reflected in our lives -- but how? How does being born again translate into behavior after our conversion?" In the same clear, readable style of his first book, Brother Robinson explains what is means to be a member of Christ's kingdom, the relationship between faith and works, what it means to endure to the end (it does not mean "being perfect"), the nature of mortality, hazards we may encounter as we seek to endure in the Lord's service, and, finally, the importance of serving others in love. Review Excerpts: "The 'Rocky Road of Righteousness' made a little easier! And we know also, that sanctification through the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is just and true, to all those who love and serve God with all their mights, minds, and strength. D&C 20:31 This is the companion book to Believing Christ, and I am afraid it has been ignored and is treated as Believing Christs ugly sister. This book deserves better, and coming from the same author, you should expect the same quality as in Believing Christ. And Brother Robinson delivers! This books picks up where its predecessor leaves off. It focuses on the process of sanctification, the straight and narrow path, or the Rocky Road of Righteousness! Once we accept Christ as the Keeper of the gate, then enter the gate of justification, we are invited to walk along the path of Righteousness, which is the process of Sanctification. Sanctification is where we slowly bend ourselves into godhood by continually bending ourselves in repentance and in submission to Christ. Imagine a married couple dancingthat is our relationship with the Bridegroom! The power of this book is the way it explains the old doctrine in a new way. These are thing that we have been taught all our lives and have read and studies, but Brother Robinsons approach is fresh. If Elder Talmages British verbosity and sesquipediality slow you up or wear you down, this is the book for you. It is an easy read, and seems more like a nice chat with an old friend than a book of theology. Robinson also uses analogies in a masterful wayhis genius. He transposes theology out of mystery into mastery of the subject. The key parable is one of divers: in a diving competition, difficulty of the test is taken into account. The same applies to our lifes test: growing up with child or sexual abuse and mental retardation are taken account in the final judgement.. As I said, this book should be read with Believing Christ, since both books express the same thought. In fact, some day I would like to see both of these books published as a Twofer. Hopefully these books will spur us on to reread the classics: Miracle of Forgiveness, Mediation and Atonement, Jesus the Christ, and the Messiah series. I was surprised to thumb through Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith and was surprised to see the rampant Christology. The ultimate test, however, is how a book draws us closer to the scriptures and finally to the Father Himself." --Kendal Brian Hunter, 2001 "This has had a profound comforting and strengthening effect on me -- must read! A wonderful book that gave me great hope and comfort. Although a member all my life, for the first time I feel I understand the saving principles of the Gospel in their simplicity. This book is a great comfort to those of us who constantly suffer from feelings of guilt and anxiety about our status with God because we never feel we're doing good enough. Perfectionists, compulsives, addicts and others with great and small afflictions and tribulations will take great comfort and encouragement from this book. Those of us that generally kick ourselves too hard and think we never do enough or well enough can begin to live the gospel principle from a "position of hope and comfort" rather than from fear, anxiety and feelings of inadequacy." --Jeff Cook, 1999 "Outside the Standard Works, this book, together with Bruce Hafen's "The Broken Heart," are two LDS books that have most positively impacted my life during the past decade. Prior to reading these two books, I never saw myself as anything remotely close to being celestial material. My "compass bearings" have changed considerably, thanks to both books. I have read this book an almost embarrassing number of times. In my interaction with other church members, I am surprised at how often I find myself referring to one of the numerous gospel-centered concepts so marvelously and uniquely illustrated in this small book. It rings and resonates that authentic for me. One very important aspect of this book, was that it was devoid of any self-congratulatory statements. For authors who wish to impact those who feel nearly detached from the church because they feel so overwhelmed and overburdened, who perhaps do not adequately understand the intended role of the Church and Savior in their lives, this is extremely important." --Thomas Tew, 2002
