Book of Mormon Authors: Their Words and Messages
Many Latter-day Saints can distinguish between the writings of prophets such as Ezra Taft Benson, David O. McKay, and Brigham Young, because each of these men had characteristics and themes unique to himself. Roger R. Keller reasons that if the writings of latter-day prophets reflect their authors' personal characteristics, then records left by ancient prophets should also contain features that distinguish their athours as individuals. In this book Professor Keller, of the Department of Church History and Doctrine at Brigham Young Universtiy, analyzes the traits that set each Book of Mormon author apart form the others. Through his study opf how various authors such as Nephi, Alma, and Moroni differ in thei general areas of interest as well as in their use of specific words, Professor Keller refutes the suggestion made by critics of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints that the Book of Mormon was written by a single nineteenth-century author. Professor Keller takes a unique look at the Book of Mormon as he views the text in terms of author individuality. Readers of scripture generally seek to discover truth by looking beyond stylistic features of individual writers to find the Lord's message. Professor Keller shows that a scientific study of author uniqueness in the Book of Mormon can be valuable as it confirms one's acceptance by faith that the Book of Mormon is a compilation of serveral ancient prophets' writings. While he warns that a person's testimony of the Book of Mormon cannot and should not be based upon a linguistic analysis of its writings, Professor Keller demonstrates that the results obtained by applying reason and technology to the text can deepen on's appreciation for the prophets and also strengthen one's testimony that the Book of Mormon is an ancient text of sacred scripture. Roger R. Keller is a professor of Church history and doctrine at BYU and holds a Ph.D. from Duke University. His academic training focused on biblical studies and twentieth-century Christian theology. Title: Book of Mormon Authors: Their Words and Messages Retail Price: Your Price: Only $14.50
