Take Heed that Ye Be Not Deceived
Richard I. Winwood, Salt Lake City, Utah: Winwood, 1995, 6x8" softbound, 106 pages.
This book is a revealing look at anti-Mormon literature, its authors and their motives. Richard I. Winwood is a native of Portland, Oregon, where he was a member of a large Protestant church from his youth. In 1971, missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints contacted and taught him and his wife, Judy. They joined the church, and since his conversion Mr. Winwood has served in many church positions, mostly as a lay leader and teacher. He has also served as a mission president for the Church of Jesus Christ in the Canada Halifax Mission in Nova Scotia and the Temple Square Mission in Salt Lake City. Prior to his service as a mission president, Winwood had a successful business career.
Mr. Winwood is a student of the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and other latter-day scriptures, as well as early Christian history. He has also made an extensive study of material written and taught by opponents of the church. His understanding of anti-Mormon tactics and claims, coupled with an in-depth understanding of church doctrine and teaching, has led him to write this book in an effort to help others in their search for truth. Contents include: A Historical Perspective, Discovering Truth from the Source, Pronouncements and Questions, Do Mormons practice polygamy?, Is Mormonism is a cult?, Are Mormons Christian?, Do Mormons worship a plurality of gods?, Do Mormons believe they will become gods?, Do Mormons believe in modern prophecy, Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith, What about the various accounts of Joseph Smith's first vision, Solomon Spaulding's manuscript, and changes to the Book of Mormon?, Is the Pearl of Great Price translated incorrectly?, Are Joseph Smith's prophecies false?, What about the Adam-God theory?, Do Mormons live "another gospel?", Do Mormons recognize the Bible as scripture?, Is Mormonism biblically valid?, Are Mormons saved by works?, Are Mormons prejudiced against blacks?, Are Mormon youth forced to serve missions?, What about The God Makers? Also, unanswered questions and charges, basic Anti-Mormon history, and why anti-Mormons do what they do. An appendix includes: The Great Deceivers, Eber D. Howe and "Doctor" Philastus Hurlbut, Walter Ralston Martin, J. Edward Decker, "Professor" Dee Jay Nelson, and Jerald and Sandra Tanner.
