Illuminating the Sermon at the Temple & the Sermon on the Mount: An Approach of 3 Nephi 11-18 and Matthew 5-7

John W. Welch, Provo, Utah: Foundation for Ancient Research & Mormon Studies (FARMS), 1999, 6x9" softbound, 296 pages. ISBN: 0934893373

This 1999 book makes substantial additions to John Welch's 1990 book on the sermons. Christ's masterful teachings in the Sermon on the Mount are the heart of Christianity. Yet aspects of the sermon have perplexed biblical scholars for years. Latter-day Saints believe that the resurrected Christ delivered essentially the same sermon to disciples in the Western Hemisphere. Subtle differences in the text and clear indications of context, as recorded in the Book of Mormon, provide significant clues to the meaning of the biblical text. Welch views the New World context-at the Nephite temple at Bountiful, in connection with sacred covenant making-as the key to a deeper understanding of Jesus' sermon. In this new revision, Welch adds new evidence and interpretations that are the result of a decade of ongoing research.
