Investigating the Book of Mormon Witnesses

Richard Lloyd Anderson, Salt Lake City, Utah: Deseret Book Company, 1989, 5.5x8.5" softbound, 206 pages. ISBN: 0875792421

Who were the witnesses whose testimonies are published in every edition of the Book of Mormon? Can we take their testimonies seriously? In this carefully researched, thought-provoking book, Richard Lloyd Anderson presents evidence from original sources on each of the eleven witnesses and concludes:

"Statements clearly traced to the witnesses verify the testimonies printed in the Book of Mormon. . . . After years of working with their lives and their words, I am deeply convinced that their printed testimonies must be taken at face value."

Review Excerpts:

"Next to the scriptures, I believe that's the most faith promoting book in the history of the Church." --Kent P. Jackson, as related by Daniel C. Peterson in "Autobiographical Notes on my Testimony"

"This is one of the most important books ever published in the field of Book of Mormon studies. I recommend it without hesitation, and with the greatest enthusiasm. It deserves to be kept in print for the indefinite future." --Daniel C. Peterson, 2000

"Anderson's book is the most definative source for anyone seeking to learn more about the witnesses of the Book of Mormon. The book puts to rest any doubt that the witnesses may have withdrew their statements concerning the "gold" plates. It begins dedicating a chapter to each of the three witnesses and then goes on to give a briefer analysis of the eight witnesses as well as others who saw or felt the plates. It is concise yet complete. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the Book of Mormon." --Nigel, 2000

Dr. Anderson received his Ph.D. from the University of California (Berkeley) and is Professor Emeritus of Ancient Scripture at BYU. He is senior research fellow at the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History at BYU, where he taught New Testament and Church history for four decades. With doctorates in both law and history, he is a scholars' scholar.

His passion for history has profoundly influenced his scholarly career; his passion for order and system has shaped his missionary work and directed his into studying law; and his love for Brigham Young University and loyalty to its mission and destiny have guided his academic path. He is a respected specialist on the lives of Joseph Smith and of the Book of Mormon witnesses.
