Approach to the Book of Mormon

Hugh W. Nibley; John W. Welsh (Editor). Salt Lake City, Utah: Deseret Book Company, 1993, The Collected Works of Hugh Nibley, Volume 6, 3rd Edition, hardbound, 541 pages. ISBN: 0875791387

This volume was originally published in 1957 as a Melchizedek Priesthood lesson manual. Nibley compares the cultural traits of the Middle East with those described in the Book of Mormon. Joseph Fielding Smith wrote in the first edition's preface that Nibley's writings will appeal to every sincere student and should be studied by every member of the Church. The original foreword noted: The mystery that some writers have tried to throw around the Book of Mormon disappears and the book and its characters become real and natural. Few other books contribute so much to our understanding of the Book of Mormon.

Hugh Nibley received his Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1939. He is emeritus professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University. He is a gifted scholar, educator, and lecturer who has been delighting and motivating Latter-day Saints for decades. A prolific writer, a keen and witty observer, and a relentless critic of the worldly, he has led LDS Church members of all ages to a deeper understanding of and commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
