Documents of the Christian Church
Since its first publication in 1967, this collection of writings from the most important moments in the history of Christianity has established itself as a classic work. Now incorporating a wealth of new material, this new edition will be an essential reference source for anyone interested in the history of the Christian Church. While retaining the original material selected by Henry Bettenson, Chris Maunder has added a substantial section of more recent writings. These new entries illustrate the Second Vatican Council; the theologies of liberation; Church and State from 'Thatcher's Britain' to Communist Eastern Europe; Black, feminist, and ecological theology; ecumenism; and inter-faith dialogue. The emphasis on moral debate in the contemporary Churches is reflected in selections dealing with modern issues such as homosexuality, divorce, AIDS, and in-vitro fertilization. With the publication of this new edition, Documents of the Christian Church provides insights into the whole 2000 year of Christian theological and political debate. Contents:
The Church and the World Creeds The Earliest Testimony of the Gospels The Person and Work of Christ The Problem of the Relation of the Divinity and the Humanity in Christ Pelagianism. Human Nature, Sin, and Grace The Church, the Ministry, and the Sacraments The Authority of the Holy See Christian Inscriptions Part II The Empire and the Papacy Monasticism and the Friars The Church and Heresy The Conciliar Movenent Scholasticism The Church of England until the Reformation The Reformation on the Continent The Reformation in England The Roman Catholic Church from the Counter-Reformation to the Second Vatican Council The British Churches in the Seventeenth Century The British Churches in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries The Roman Catholic Church at the Second Vatican Council The Twentieth-Century World Churches: Justice, Peace, and the Environment The Twentieth-Century World Churches and Inter-faith Dialogue The Twentieth-Century Churches and Christian Unity The Twentieth-Century Churches: Sexuality and Procreation Review Excerpts: "Here is a fine collection of the most important source materials for the history of Christianity, in a compact and attractive little volume." --The Christian Century "That invaluable Christian reference book." --Church Times "Covering the whole range of Christian thought, it is specially valuable to the young student." --Church Quarterly Review "If you want to know more about the history of the church, and you want to read the original documents, this is the book. This book will take you deeper into doctrine origination and debate throughout the history of the church. There are many typed of documents represented from Augustine to more modern documents on Jesuits. I appreciate the fact they do some limited notes for you to help you understand dates, but otherwise leave you to figure out for yourself what these documents mean, and if they are valid or not. It leaves it up to you, not someone telling you what they think. Good compilation and scholarship." --Joseph Dworak Chris Maunder is Senior Lecturer in Theology and Religious Studies at the University College of Ripon and York St John.
